Emily Carr University is a world-renowned art and design institution. It houses both local talents as well as talents from different parts of the world. Emily Carr’s undergraduate studies range from visual arts, media, industrial and communication design, and photography as well as academic studies. At Emily Carr I earned a Bachelors Degree in Design with a Communication Design major .
My Decision
I entered post-secondary studies as a visual arts person. As someone who had a passion for the creative arts since a very young age, I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by creative people: visual artists, designers and photographers. I still want to learn everything I possibly can about art and design and I believe that I have the talent to pursue the discipline. Before attending Emily Carr University I had formal art training at Langara College. My studies at Langara provided the framework for a better understanding of art forms as well as an understanding of the underlying principles and elements of art and design. In addition, I was introduced to the formal elements of conceptual thinking .
With the skills learned at Langara, I found that it was an easy decision to transition to Emily Carr University. Because I believe that design offers the best opportunities in terms of integrating multiple art disciplines, I was excited to dive into design at Emily Carr. A prestigious and distinctive art school, Emily Carr justifiably prides itself as a conceptual institution that I can personally attest continues to live up to its reputation.
As technology continues to progress and develop, technical training such as learning Adobe’s design tools can always be an indefinite and continuing process.
The Education
The Communication Design program at Emily Carr focuses on both the technical aspects of design in addition to ideation, brainstorming, and emerging with interesting, witty and clever concepts. The form comes from the ideas. As technology continues to progress and develop, technical training such as learning Adobe’s design tools can always be an indefinite and continuing process. Emily Carr ultimately aims to challenge their students to develop evolving ideas and concepts. With great ideas comes exceptional form.
The Communication Design program teaches students in-depth principles of typography and design while also stressing in-depth discussion of contemporary design and social issues. While core principles are clearly disseminated and explained, the program also encourages and challenges the student’s personal exploration of rules and principles.
You could argue that in a saturated art and design community such as Vancouver’s, design graduates are expected to possess all the technical proficiency from software to prepress knowledge if they want to compete for entry level design jobs. However, having only those skills will limit one’s design sense and awareness into a higher level. Some people are complacent: to be just a form maker is enough to satisfy them. Ultimately this is an individual’s personal choice, but to be a visionary designer one must possess not only exceptional talent, but also remarkable conceptual skills, drive, and technical knowledge. Emily Carr and its faculty challenge and assure their students to get a good grasp for these attributes.
Emily Carr’s design program includes an intense three-year program plus an initial one-year foundation program. Transfer students from other institutions are still required to do the full three years. This intense program is a worthwhile experience for aspiring designers, regardless of their creative arts backgrounds. Some may find it unchallenging at first but it is better to enter the program with an open mind because the program is designed so that everyone starts on an equal level.
