When I was trying to decide which 3D school to attend after high school, I decided on Humber College. It was a new course at the time, but from the portfolio review process and general outline, I felt comfortable taking a chance on it, and did it ever pay off. Humber gave me so much that I’m actually now a part-time instructor in the very 3D program I once took, as well as a 3D animator in the Industry.
The Setup
The 3D program at Humber is located at the North Campus in Etobicoke, and the general flow of the program is something like this.
Now that was a broad simplification of the course, but it really is unique in its format.
You learn a strong base in many aspects of 3D production at first, then find your niche and carve out your own personal career path based on which area you both enjoy and are best at (with guidance from the staff of course). Now that was a broad simplification of the course, but it really is unique in its format. The course really creates an array of skilled artists for any area of a 3D production pipeline such as; modelers & texture artists, technical directors, pre-vis artists, visual effects artists, 3D animators, and many more. The course has gone on to have a great reputation among 3D studios who have hired Humber students.
I also decided to take the 1 year post grad course which was just as intense, but much more advanced in technique. It was almost entirely dedicated to your own chosen career path. It was just a chance to really take my skills to the next level before going into the industry. It was a great book-end to my Humber experience. And since most students chose the same path, I believe the 2-year diploma course will eventually be expanded into a 3-year program.
After some time in the industry, I really got into character animation, but felt I wanted to learn more for my own benefit. I applied to Gobelin’s character animation summer school in Paris and I feel that my Humber demo reel got me in. It was an amazing experience.
The Truth
In all honesty however, this is not an easy course. It will keep you working non-stop, you will learn so much in such a short amount of time. It really demands a lot from its students, but the rewards are worth it. That being said, you get what you put into it, you’ll only learn a lot if you want to. There are many unsuccessful Humber students, simply because they were not dedicated to it.
I wasn’t able to afford having a part-time job while I was at school because of the workload, but it still paid off. Once graduate, it didn’t take me long to find work in the industry. And artists looking for a 2D character animation course will not find it at Humber, although the college has produced many successful 3D animators.
All in all, I fully endorse this program, but only for artists who are really willing to put in the effort.
The Verdict
All in all, I fully endorse this program, but only for artists who are really willing to put in the effort. Humber college produces production ready 3D artists. Former Humber students are always able to adapt in a studio, they know how to work within a 3D pipeline and are sought after for their hard-work and knowledge.
I’m grateful to the school and its staff for giving me so much, and I’m glad to now be a part of the same staff, helping shape new 3D artists. I hope to see you there.
