I definitely agree with the aim of forcing students to make music on a budget. I use GarageBand for everything.

While this program sounds like a good introduction to music production, the $10,000 of tuition might be better spent over two years at VCC, SFU, UBC or Cap.

While I agree with some of your sentiments on free self learning Laura, I found that actually enrolling in an institution not only helped push me in the right direction, but through financial commitment; led me to work more diligently and consistently.
<br />
Much like when I spend money on a new synth or sample collection - I feel more inclined to use something that I paid for than something I did not. For this reason, I think there is a not-so-hidden value in paying for your education, as it subconsciously increases the value you place in your personal development, hopefully resulting in greater personal achievement.
<br />
I can agree that paying for an education in music may not be necessary for all people, but it certainly helped push me along - and the music industry is definitely a place where it's good to have a sense of direction.

It is really useful to learn how to do home recording on a budget using the sounds and technology of today. Once you learn the basics, as you get more money, it is pretty easy to wrap your head around higher level gear. But, if you don't have 10K to spend on it, you'll have to educate yourself via forums and youtube etc. Be careful when you go to buy gear for the first time... research.
