With an endless passion for expressing 3D Worlds, I knew I needed a school that was up front, intense, and had no limits.
Up Front
By the second semester Think Tank promises that they will tell you if you are in the right field. They are the only school that will give back the rest of your year’s due if they believe you just don’t have what it takes to make in this industry. Think Tank looks for talent and a solid work ethic in all the students they accept to the school. This does not mean you will magically get there without the time and effort.
Unfortunately, I learned more in my first semester at Think Tank than I did in the entire year and a half at AI.
Intense
I previously received a Diploma at the Art Institute of Vancouver, (Downtown location) four years prior to Think Tank, in Game Art Design. The downtown location at the time had no space for gamers. I did however learn the basics and that I was atleast in the right field. Unfortunately, I learned more in my first semester at Think Tank than I did in the entire year and a half at AI. This is not to say AI is not an option given I know nothing of their other programs and or locations. My time at the downtown location of AI was just not going well for me. The care for students was also lacking at the time. When I was done at AI, the school made me pay a fair bit of money for using a station to wrap up my demo reel after I had graduated. Think Tank makes you stay until your Demo Reel is good enough to get a job for free. They give you a new dedicated workstation, more training, and lots of advice and encouragement! They won’t send you to a job interview unless they think you’ll get the job.
They teach you to be exceptional, not just good.
No Limits
At the start of the year they showed us a cross section of student demo reels from around the world. By second semester we could tell that most of what we saw and thought was “not bad” was crap. They teach you to be exceptional, not just good. The best jobs demand great work. Think Tank teaches a wide variety of software programs. Maya, XSI, ZBrush, Mudbox, Lightwave, etc… They want you to understand that it is not about the software but the techniques you use within the package. It is about being able to adapt to any software program that comes your way. You never use one program for your entire career. In thinking otherwise you will only limit how good you can become. Think outside the box, and find a way to make it happen.
The Verdict
Think Think Tank. I did and I have nothing but great things to say about this school. These guys really care about me and my career.
Here is my website – I just graduated from a year of being a full time student. I am almost finished my reel. I have never worked in this field before and only plan to improve from here.
