Can someone please say an honest answer....in the past 2 years, 2009-2010, is the school worth paying $50,000 for? I mean, and on top of that living? Jesus christ how can something cost this much and yet everyone has bad reviews, also I find it so hard to believe that the instructors are really as stupid as people say, look how much they're charging.

How come when people post negative review, they are considered spammers or bully's? Yet, the people that post positive reviews are the best people ever?
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have never been to VFS, but just cause someone didn't have a good experience doesn't mean they are disgruntled students. Maybe it did suck. Maybe it didn't.
Calm down.

Alright then, so I went to VFS and was completely underwhelmed. I will not argue that you do learn some cool stuff, the problem is that it is all stuff you can learn from books. The biggest lesson you will learn is that to get experience having gear is a huge plus. instead of paying a ridiculous amount of money on school you could buy a bunch of sweet gear rent it out and learn on set while you make money! 20000 g's worth of sound gear can be rented for hundreds a day! the main problem with VFS is the instructors for the most part, have not worked in the film industry in years and are completely cut off from contemporary and indie film making ideas.
example: when discussing a loser protagonists successful twin brother: Instructor: "you could have him grin and his teeth do that sparkle thing with a TING sound effect"
?? anybody with any taste would have to agree this is an antiquated gag and besides for ironical purposes is completely idiotic. this is just one of many examples of terrible taste from instructors. remember for every Good or just OK film on VFS youtube there are at least a hundred terrible films that if you are unlucky you will get stuck on.
Instructors also try to take over projects it's generally their way or the highway and they get very offended by a student who for better or worse wants to stick to their vision.
About the "9-5" schooling this is true you will be at school all times of the day, Mostly sitting in the VFS cafe waiting for your next class to start as there is often hours between classes this year long course should really only take six months if it was scheduled better.
Apparently it is better now as my class in particular did a lot of complaining about the lack of gear to sign out now they have weekend packages which is sweet.
complaining will get you nowhere you have to play the game to get ahead at VFS stroke instructors egos etc.
getting in to VFS is easy too easy if the cheque clears your in simple as that. Don't get pulled into the hype about needing a demo reel. And don't be fooled if your admissions adviser tells you that to get a discount your demo reel is judged and the best ones get those students a discount this is bogus. basically hum and haw and they will give you 5 grand off.
there is a huge push to have female and foreign directors (mostly Koreans as they recently opened up a million dollar recruiting center in Korea)
this might sound harsh but it is the truth.
So if you go to VFS remember this pretty much every movie you make will suck they are student films it is their nature to stink. don't get caught up in the b.s a wanting to direct and try to do everything Sound is amazing and probly has the best instructor in the school. just remember d.o.p's cam ops just try to get 20 seconds of quality out of each film thats all you need for a demo reel.
the great things about demo reels is that there is no dialogue needed so your set!
I hope this does not come off as a bitter guy I am doing quite well for myself although I must admit the things that have gotten me noticed were things I did before and after film school.
Vancouver Film School had a big hype on its name. The marketing team sure did a great job by showcasing the work on their website and student's success. Sure, it has its ups, but it sure has it's downs.
The first few months going into VFS of film production, were quite...dry. They had us in lectures, where a few instructors disagreed to it and wanted more workshops. I am a strong believer of workshops and believe the best way to learn something is to get hands on experience. Throughout the year, we had midterm and final term projects. I love comedy, and pitching comedy. But something about VFS angered me. They didn't like comedies! The whole genre was all dramatic pieces and honestly, it's quite difficult to pull off a good drama in 10 minutes unless you have a kickass writer.
VFS was a good school, it did teach me a little bit about everything. Which in my case, was a flaw. It taught us how to be a Jack of all Trades rather than having us master in one.
Would I recommend the school to people? Yes and no. It did help us learn a little bit, but I felt like VFS didn't get me prepared for after graduation. Everything was up to me afterward. Was it worth the $35,000 tuition? Definitely not.

OOOOOOhhhhhh child. Thanks for this insightfull insight. Ive seen too many posts of haters talkin smack about VFS. It seems to me no matter where ever you are at, you have to make the best with what you got. It seems like you did, even though i do have to agree that the tuition is the equivalent of 20 Versace suits. thanks for the info man. this helps a lot with my decision to maybe go to that school.
